Vehicle Safety Check Questions
We have received a number of enquiries from driving instructors asking for examples of the type of answers and responses that their candidates will need to give to the questions asked by the examiner.
Vehicle safety checks have always been part of the recommended syllabus for learning to drive and many driving instructors are already teaching them. Instructors now introducing this part of the syllabus for the first time will find information on how to carry out vehicle safety checks in the DSA range of Driving Skills publications and specific advice for the vehicle in the manufacturer’s handbook.
Some examples of the expected answers or responses to the questions are: -
Question
Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.Answer
Candidate opens the bonnet, identifies the dipstick or oil level indicator and describes how to check the oil level against the minimum/maximum markers.Question Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear.
Answer Candidates demonstrate that when the parking brake is fully applied, it secures itself, and that the travel is not excessive.
Question Show me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working.
Answer Candidate operates the relevant switch (turning on ignition if necessary), walks round vehicle observing the correct functioning of the lights.
Question Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
Answer Candidate explains that there should not be any cuts or bulges, tyres are inflated to the correct pressure and that 1.6mm of tread depth is present across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire circumference.
Question Tell me how you would check that the brake lights are working.
Answer Candidate explains that while they operate the brake pedal they could get someone else to check the operation of the brake lights, or they could make use of reflections in garage doors windows etc
Question How would you check the power steering
Answer Make sure car is in neutral and start the engine.Turn the wheel whilst stationary.If the wheel turns esily the steering is ok.Also by making a slow gentle turn will also tell you if the steering is ok.If the steering is heavy there is something wrong.Do not attempt to drive if this is the case.
