Reverse Parking |
You will be in a parked position from the kerb
Move away safely and drive along the road
Before you get to the car you are going to use for the park check your mirrors.
If there are any road users front or rear put on a left hand signal. No road users no signal.
You need to stop just past the car you are going to use.
When you stop handbrake on,select neutral and then get reverse gear.Anyone that now turns up behind you, will know you want to reverse.Your reversing light will now show at the rear of the car.The colour of the light is white.Any signal if given cancell it.
Check the level of the road and camber to the left to determine the clutch control. The camber is the slope of the road to your left in this instance.
If the road is downhill you can do a controlled roll using the clutch and brake. If it is uphill you will need to use the gas and clutch.Remember the higher you raise the clutch the faster you will go.Once on the camber roll down the slope using the brake and clutch to keep the car slow.Look all round for other road users. When safe reverse slowly back looking over your left shoulder.this way you will see where the back of the car is going. If the car is not straight turn the wheel in the direction you want the back to go. When you get level with the car you are using look front and right rear blind spot. If there are any road users approaching stop, apply handbrake
Let the car go back .Check front for oncomming traffic, and your right blind spot for traffic behind you.If there are any road users, stop and apply the handbrake.
As you go back the front of the car will go out to the right. You will need to bring the car in at an angle of about 40 degrees.(see photo in examples).
To correct the angle turn the wheel about a quarter turn to the right.WhiLe you turn the wheel right look over your left shoulder to make sure you are heading for the kerb.If the car goes away from the kerb steer back left,to head for the kerb.Look to the front of the car and check you have the right angle to come in.If it is still out too far turn some more right.
Once you have the correct angle look in the left wing mirror, and when your left rear wheel is 4 inches from the kerb, look over your left shoulder and turn the steering wheel fully to the right.Keep slow or you will hit the kerb. You look behind you for any parked car behind or pedestrian as you do not want to hit anything.
Once you have full right lock now look to the front as you have to line up with the car.
Just before you get level with the car in front turn the wheel left and stop in line with the front car.Apply the hand brake and select neutral gear
If you straighten too soon you will stick out.If you straighten too late your front wheels will hit the kerb.
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE POWER STEERING DO EVERYTHING THE SAME AS ABOVE,EXCEPT FOR THAT WHEN THE KERB DISAPPEARS FROM THE END OF YOUR WHEEL ARCH,THEN TURN FULLY RIGHT.
