TURN IN THE ROAD

The place you carry out the turn should be safe and legal.

When you have stopped on the left check the level of the road and both cambers for an idea of the clutch control.

Check all round for other road users and make sure no pedestrians will be walking along the pavement as you drive across the road.

When it is safe to go, move off slowly turning the steering wheel quickly to the right.

Just before you reach the other side of the road turn the wheel to the left and stop just short of the kerb. You need to be at a slight angle to the kerb.If you turn the wheel left too soon you will be at a bad angle to the kerb.

Once you have reached the other side of the road and stopped, apply the hand brake, select neutral gear.

You now want to select reverse gear, and you will now be doing a reverse hill start, so it is important that you have biting point, so as you do not roll backwards towards the kerb.

Check round for other road users, pedestrians. If it is safe release the handbrake and go backwards, looking to your left, turning the wheel to the left, if there is any more left lock you can apply.

When you get to the middle of the road, look right at the back kerb and keep looking there. At the same time turn the wheel to the right quickly, keep the car moving whilst you are doing this.

Once you have full right lock stop about 6 to 8 inches from the kerb. This is your insurance policy that your rear wheels don't hit the kerb.If you don't manage to get full right lock it does not matter.

Once you have stopped apply the handbrake, select neutral gear.

Select first gear and get the car ready to move off.Depending on the camber of the road you could be doing a forward hill start.Again biting point important so as not to roll backwards.

Check all round for other road users. If safe release the handbrake and move off slowly, steering towards the left kerb to get your normal driving position.

Remember your wheels are on full right lock so if you move off too fast you will veer across the road.
