ROUNDABOUTS

ThePhoto pages are a guide as how to use cars as blockers letting you leave your exit.As the cars do not move in the photos for a better idea it is best to stand at a roundabout and watch the movement of the cars,as you will need to judge the speed and distances of the other traffic on the roundabout.which the photos will not give you. Also these photos show you some roundabouts where you need the right lane to go ahead instead of the left lane which is the normal practice.

Basically roundabouts consist of T Junctions in a circle. They are again like T Junctions either open or closed. To be open you need to see clearly into the exit from your right some distance from the give way lines. If you can't see hardly anything, then it is a closed roundabout.

I classify roundabouts in three types. The big ones with the exits spread out,Mini roundabouts where you have room to go round the paint,Mini roundabouts where you have no roomto go round the paint and have to go over the paint or you would hit the kerb.

To go left at a roundabout you must signal left on approach to it.The signal must go on about the same distance from any normal turn.To go ahead there is no signal until you get half way across the last exit before the one you want to turn off at.To go right you need a right hand signal and signal left off just as you get half way across the last exit before the one you wish to turn off at.

To go left you are always in the left hand lane.To go ahead normally the left hand lane but there are exceptions which will be explained further on.To go right always the right hand lane.

On a roundabout you give way to any traffic from ahead or to your right that is going to cross your path.If there is a car ahead of you oncomming showing no signalthey are going ahead. The driver of it should give way to you as you are also to their right and are crossing their path.

As you approach the roundabout do your MSM ROUTINE get in the correct lane and decide if it is open or closed. If it is open and there is no traffic stopped at the roundabout slow down and get second gear with the clutch off at about 4 car lengths from the give way lines. If it is closed you will need first gear a car length from the give way lines.Keep your speed slow and start reading the roundabout.Look for cars from your right, which could be turning left or comming across you.Look ahead for cars going right across you.If they are you must give way to them.If they are going ahead they will be showing no signal and will possibly block cars from the exit to your right. These act as blockers so you can go.On mini roundabouts you will need to check the exit to your left for cars going  right. These will act as blockers for two exits. If your way is clear proceed.Do not hesitate if clear to go as if there is a car behind you the driver has also checked the roundabout and he is expecting you to proceed and has judged his braking etc for you to do this.Your hesitation could cause the driver behind to brake heavy, or worse still go into the back of you.
