CHANGING A WHEEL

I used to get my pupils to actually change the wheel years ago,but it is too time consuming with the focus.I told one of my female students not to wear any decent clothes for her next lesson as she was going to change the wheel. She told me why would she need to know how to do it.I asked what would happen if she got a flat tyre. She told me she would get a bloke to do it.Fine I told her, it is 2 am and you are on your way home from the night club not wearing too much in the way of clothing. There will be blokes queing up to change the wheel. Then they will want payment not in cash but probably in kind.I get your drift she said, you'd better show me how to change the wheel then.,

If you suffer a puncture or a damaged tyre you will need to change the wheel and put on the spare. The spare wheel is usually under the mat covering in the boot or under the actual car.

Remove the spare wheel and the jack and the wheel brace to undo the wheel nuts. Some cars have a special locking nut so you will need the tool to remove the locking nut as well.

Make sure the car is on flat even solid ground as you do not want the car to sink in mud or topple over.If it is not you will have to drive a very short way.If there is no decent ground nearby then phone for breakdown assistance.Do not drive far on a flat tyre or you will seriously damage the wheel rim and they are exoensive to replace especially if they are alloy wheels.

Locate the jacking point of the car. There are usually four one under the car by each door.Set up the jack but do not raise the car yet.Open the cover of the wheel nuts.Undo each nut in a diaginal fashion. When the nuts are loose, raise the car with the jack till the wheel is clearly off the ground.Carefully remove the wheel.Put on the spare wheel and do up the nuts again in a diaginal fashion. When the nuts are tight lower the car and remove the jack. Now tighten up the nuts again and replace the cover of the nuts.

If your spare wjheel is a space saver it is smaller than the wheel you removed. It has a maximumspedd limit for it which is usually 50MPH.This wheel is only meant to get you out of trouble and the original needs to be replaced as soon as possible.
