Turning Left From  Major to Minor Road

Where 2 roads or more join it is called a road junction.

 If you see give way lines to your left or right you are on the major road and have priority to drive along it ,over vehicles waiting to turn out of the roads  with the give way markings.Once past these you could then find the give way lines further ahead.You are now on the Minor Road and have to give way to traffic on the Major Road  which is now running across in front of you.

            M.S.M = Mirror,Signal,Manouvre.ALWAYS IN THAT ORDER

      P.S.L    = Position,Speed,Look

When you wish to turn left first thing is to check your mirror to see if there is anything too close behind you.If so do not make the turn.Do not speed up to avoid the person behind as they will only speed up with you.Try and go past the turning and park somewhere safely on the left.

Position Make sure you have your normal driving distance from the kerb and keep to it, about 2 feet from it and no more.

Next put on a left signal regardless of if there is any body around to see it.

The signal must be given at the correct time, not leaving it too late for a car to have to brake at the last moment as you are going to have to slow down,or too  soon making a car think you are going to park on the left,forcing it to pass you.

The signal tells anyone behind you intend to turn and you will have to slow down. When you press the brake your Brake Lights come on telling anyone behind you that you  are now slowing down.

Speed As soon as you give your signal start braking to reduce your speed.

You next look at the corner to know the required speed and gear needed for the turn.

You need to select the correct gear and change down if you have to, at the right speed, and go round the corner with the clutch up.(Your left foot not on the clutch pedal called coasting).

Next try to look at the level of the road you are going to turn into.Go round the corner with the brake covered if it is flat or downhill,use the gas pedal gently if uphill.Too much gas will result in you going round wide or not having time to correct your steering.

When you get near the corner look at it so as you know when to turn the wheel.When you turn use your left hand to move the wheel down to the left and your right pulling back tothe right to straighten up.(Referred to FEEDING THE WHEEL /PULL PUSH) Never cross your hands, as once crossed you can’t turn the wheel  any more.

As you turn into the road, you are looking for pedestrians crossing the  road and  parked cars on the left.If there are pedestrians crossing you must stop even if it is your mother in law,and any parked cars go round them, if safe to do so.

You need to turn the wheel back to the right  when the car is at a slight angle pointing right .The faster you turn into the road,the sooner you need to straighten up.

Whilst you are doing this look to the left to get your normal driving position from the kerb.

  When you enter the road your car needs to go in a straight line when you are correcting the steering and not veer to the kerb causing a steering error.Most steering errors will be caused by going too fast not giving you enough time to straighten up.To straighten up pull down with  your right hand and push with the left (FEEDING WHEEL METHOD)

When the car is straight check your mirror, adjust your speed etc to conditions of the road you have now entered.
